Sun Capital Partners, Inc.

Private equity has many origin stories, but few as instructive as Sun Capital's. Marc Leder and Rodger Krouse founded the firm in 1995 after careers at Lehman Brothers — neither of them, at that point, possessed of a significant investment track record, but both possessed of a conviction that the mid-market was full of businesses that needed operational intervention more than they needed financial engineering. The thesis was not elegant. It required rolling up sleeves, getting on planes, and spending serious time understanding why a business's margins were deteriorating before anyone proposed a solution.
Three decades later, Sun Capital has invested in more than 550 companies worldwide — businesses generating aggregate revenues in excess of $50 billion — across services, industrials, distribution, and consumer sectors. The $6.3 billion in assets under management as of late 2024 represents not a pivot from the original thesis but a vindication of it. The firm's in-house operations team, embedded alongside portfolio company management rather than parachuted in for quarterly reviews, remains the distinguishing structural feature of an organization that has navigated more business cycles than most of its peers have lived through.
The firm's focus on "defensible businesses in growing markets with tangible performance improvement opportunities" is how Sun Capital describes its sourcing criteria. What it means in practice is a willingness to invest in companies that other sponsors pass on — businesses with real underlying value that require the patience and operational depth to surface it. The firm commits to closing acquisitions within 30 days of a signed letter of intent, and structures most transactions without financing contingencies. These are not minor details. In a market where certainty of close has become a competitive weapon, they are the practical expression of three decades of operational conviction.
