Underscore VC

When Underscore VC was founded in 2015, its founding partners set out to solve a problem that is, once you name it, obvious: the people who know best how to help a B2B software company scale are not, for the most part, the people writing the checks. They are the operators, executives, domain experts, and former founders who have built and sold companies in the specific markets those startups are entering. Most venture firms engage this network informally and inconsistently. Underscore formalized it, and then shared the upside.
The result is the Underscore Core Community — a curated ecosystem of 112 Core Partners who receive a profit share in the firm's investments in exchange for genuine, ongoing support to portfolio companies. More than 30 Core Community members have joined portfolio companies as critical hires. Eighty-five percent of Underscore's pre-seed and seed investments have gone on to successfully raise follow-on capital. The model does not rely on the reputation of a celebrity GP or the gravitational pull of a billion-dollar fund. It relies on a network of aligned experts who have skin in the same game as the founders they support — and a firm that has spent a decade proving the model produces outcomes.
The Boston orientation is strategic rather than accidental. Underscore is a limited partner in the Harvard Innovation Labs' Allston Venture Fund, MIT's The Engine and Sandbox funds, and Dorm Room Fund — giving the firm early access to founders emerging from some of the most productive academic innovation ecosystems in the world. Over half of the firm's pre-seed and seed investments have come from the Boston community. The concentration has produced a network effect: Underscore is, by the consistent testimony of its portfolio founders, the best-connected VC in the Boston ecosystem. As the firm enters its next chapter under a new generation of general partners who built the Core Community model alongside its founders, that network — and the profit-sharing structure that sustains it — remains the structural advantage that no competitor has fully replicated.
