Volition Capital

The name was chosen deliberately. Volition — the act of making a conscious choice — reflects a firm philosophy that extends from the decision to leave Fidelity Investments to launch an independent growth equity firm in 2010, through every investment thesis the firm has pursued since. Sean Cantwell, Larry Cheng, and Roger Hurwitz built Volition Capital on the conviction that the most interesting companies in software are not the ones burning through venture dollars to buy growth, but the ones that have proven they can build real businesses without it — and that need a patient, operationally engaged partner to scale what they've already validated.
The firm's investment criteria are specific by design: founder ownership of 20 percent or more (a proxy for conviction and alignment), capital efficiency (a proxy for business model quality), and a meaningful revenue base that demonstrates product-market fit rather than asserts it. Volition takes minority ownership stakes with board positions, investing across B2B software, consumer internet, and hardware-enabled SaaS in check sizes ranging from single-digit millions to the full capacity of the fund. With $1.7 billion in assets under management across five funds — including Fund V at $675 million, closed in January 2023 — the firm has deployed capital into more than 235 investments with 108 exits, including three unicorns and two IPOs.
The 2023 fundraise was, in the context of a venture market that had contracted dramatically from its 2021 peak, a notable outcome: a Boston-based growth equity firm raising its largest fund in a year when most of its peers were either cutting fund sizes or extending timelines. Inc. Magazine has named Volition to its Founder-Friendly Investors list for multiple consecutive years — a designation drawn from founder surveys rather than marketing materials, and one that reflects the culture Cantwell, Cheng, and Hurwitz have built across fifteen years of showing up for the companies they back. GrowthCap has recognized the firm as a Top Growth Equity Firm for four consecutive years. The Volition Edge platform, the Scaling Success podcast, and the firm's inaugural Leadership Summit — bringing portfolio company executives to Boston for peer learning — reflect an investment in portfolio company success that outlasts the typical quarterly check-in.
